Democracy in Action: Akshara Students Vote on Holiday Days

On September 15th, Akshara joined the rest of the world in observing the International Day of Democracy with a special classroom activity in one of the neighbouring villages.

For this activity, Akshara worked with a selected class in a nearby village school.

The session began with a story titled “The Village Where Everyone Had Equal Rights”, which introduced the children to the idea of democracy in a relatable and straightforward manner.

This was followed by a mock voting exercise on the topic: “How many holidays should we have in a week – one day or two days?”

The children cast their votes by placing ballots into a ballot box. To mimic real-life elections, ink was applied to their fingers after voting.

Through this activity, the children learned:

  • Every vote counts equally in a democracy.
  • Majority voting facilitates the making of fair and collective decisions.
  • Following rules, standing in line, and being patient are critical civic values.
  • Voting is not just a right, but a responsibility.

Overall, the activity gave the children a hands-on experience of how voting works and helped them understand the core principles of democracy.

Akshara is MUWCI’s local social-impact initiative, working with over 2,500 people in the Mulshi valley through holistic service learning. It aims to strengthen rural education by enhancing literacy, numeracy, and 21st-century skills such as digital literacy and collaboration, while partnering with nearby government schools. Students across MUWCI engage with Akshara through their Trivenis, combining service and learning to make a real difference.
