Since 2005, Akshara, a local impact initiative of UWC Mahindra College, has provided youth in rural Maharashtra with educational support and access to opportunity to help them achieve independence and find employment in vocational and professional fields. Today, Akshara serves more than 450 people in seven villages, including elementary students, pre-university/college-level students, and Adivasi or tribal adults. In addition to educational support, Akshara also helps participants secure their first jobs once they graduate. Akshara’s approach emphasizes the participants’ unique talents and seeks to help them become more confident, to build social capital and, most importantly, to dream of making a better life for themselves and those around them.
To empower rural youth, and children (with a particular emphasis on the girl child), by providing them access to educational opportunities and personal support.
To date, more than 27 students from the Akshara programme have attended (or are attending) UWCs as UWC scholars, both here at UWC Mahindra College and in colleges around the world. Akshara provides a meaningful link between our College and local communities and it enables UWC students from around the world to gain a better understanding of education and building sustainable communities in rural India.
